I swear I’ll finish them…
Fabric, clay, vinyl, paint, you name it, I have it! It starts the same way, with a random thought sparked by a random video and suddenly I am thinking, “I can do that”. Next thing I know, there are packages arriving at my house filled with “essential” items that I absolutely needed. Half of them arriving after I have already moved on from the project.
Last fall, I decided that I was going to make polymer clay earrings. Not just one or two things of clay, no I bought an entire case of clay and handfuls of stencils. Then I learned something really important, I hate making earrings. They are hard, the clay gets everywhere, and I don’t like the way it feels on my skin. So now, I have a pile of clay, next to it sits my Sridar Halloween Crochet Along blanket the one I started, got bored of, and never finished. Not because I didn’t have time… but because I was simply over it.
We have all done this, we are inspired for 0.5 seconds and instantly think, I must do this. What I realized is that the planning, the researching, the ordering, the novelty of the new supplies, is what I enjoy most. And when the novelty wears off, so does the excitement of the project.
I used to think, wow, I wasted all this money, and now I have a garage full of projects and nothing to show for it. But eventually, I learned to take a step back and see it differently. It’s not waste, it’s an exploration. It’s learning. It’s trying new things, discovering what we like, and finishing a few things along the way.
I stared donating items on Buy Nothing groups whenever someone wanted to try a new hobby. I’ve been teaching my kids that everything can be made, you just need curiosity, patience, and the willingness to learn.
As always, creativity isn’t linear. We already know threads aren’t straight…and your projects definitely don’t need to be perfect.
Thanks for being here ♡
This is just the beginning, and I’m thrilled to have you along for the ride.
