I didn’t mean to collect hobbies, it just happened…

I’ve always been the kind of person who hears the price of something and thinks, “I’ll just do it myself.” Which is probably why I’ve collected more hobbies than I can count. Sewing, knitting, Cricut, embroidery, painting, if it involves making something, I’ve probably tried it.

And honestly? This whole journey started with one very unfortunate pair of pants.

I didn’t know it then, but that one chaotic decision would kick off years of collecting hobbies, learning new crafts, and eventually building a tiny business out of all the crooked, imperfect things I made.

In 2023ish, I purchased a pair of pants and being vertically challenged meant that they needed to be hemmed. The hemming was going to cost me more than the pants!

I refused and purchased a sewing machine instead, thinking I can do this myself. I couldn’t, I really really couldn’t and ended up ruining my pants.

It was June and PRIDE month was happening and having been an active member of the community; I randomly received PRIDE event emails. That week, I received an email from someone name Suri with the subject line, Vendors Needed!

Did I know who Suri was? No, and usually I am pretty cautious and ignore stranger’s emails but that day I didn’t. Not only did I not ignore it, but I also replied and said, I’d like to be a vendor.

Had I ever been a vendor? No, did I have made items? No. Did I know what I was doing, again no.

Well, I received a reply asking me to fill out the vendor application and providing me with the event details.

Most people would panic; I didn’t even have a business name or a business!

Most importantly, I didn’t have any products! What I should have don was tell Suri that I could not attend the event. Which btw, was scheduled for the following week!

Instead, I spent that first night, researching vendor events, how to become a vendor, what I needed and trying to think of actual products I could take.

I had seven days, no experience, no products, and no idea where to start.

Naturally, I called my sisters and said HELP! I Need Products!

I needed products for a business that didn’t exist! Everyone got to work and the products were underway, but I still didn’t have a business name.

I was nervous and wanted to ensure people knew that I was a beginner and that perfection was not on my table. Thus, Imperfect Goods by Ang was created. The name set an expectation and was definitely a conversation starter.

Over the course of the week, I signed up for a trade name and a TPT license and started watching tons and tons of videos of things I could make with a sewing machine and sell.

I started with key fobs, lanyards, coin purses, and a couple of shirts. I will admit that there was not a straight line in sight.

My sisters came through and we attended the event the following week and actually made a few sales! That summer, we ended up attending 5 events and growing our inventory little by little.

As we continue to evolve, Imperfect Goods by Ang no longer fit, as I was not the sole creator of the items, but I wanted to stick with the theme, my items weren’t perfect, but they were part of my journey. The Crooked Thread Company was created as a reminder of where we began.

Imperfect Goods by Ang - Where it all began!

Looking back, I realize this wasn’t just the start of a business. It was the start of becoming a full‑blown hobby collector. Every new craft taught me something, even when the lines weren’t straight and the pants didn’t survive.

And honestly? I wouldn’t change a thing. The crooked path is the best part.

What This Taught Me

  • Makers don’t wait until they’re ready

  • Curiosity is louder than fear

  • You don’t need perfection to begin

  • Every hobby adds something to your story

  • The messy middle is where the magic happens

Thanks for being here ♡

This is just the beginning, and I’m thrilled to have you along for the ride.
