How to Make an Embroidered Patch: A Beginner’s Guide

What I learned from making my first patches — fraying fabric, bulky stitches and all.

Embroidery Patches have been around for thousands of years, and they are still popular today. Why? Because they can be customized in almost every way from size and colors to the design itself. They can be subtle or completely out there.

Patches aren’t just decorative, either. They’ve long been used to represent organizations, ranks, achievements, and identities. You’ll find them on military uniforms, law enforcement uniforms, Girl Scout vests, and plenty of everyday jackets, bags, hats, and more.

So, how are they actually made?

If you have an embroidery machine, the process might be easier than you think. In this guide, I’ll walk you through how I make an embroidered patch, what you’ll need, and a few things I learned along the way.

What You Need

  1. Embroidery Machine – While patches can absolutely be embroidered by hand, I’ll be using an embroidery machine for this tutorial.

  2. Stabilizer – Stabilizer helps support your fabric while the machine is stitching and keeps the design from shifting, puckering, or getting distorted. Cut-away, tear-away, and water-soluble stabilizers are all commonly used in machine embroidery. The one you choose will depend on the type of patch you’re making and the material you’re using.

  3. Patch Material – You’ll need something for the actual base of your patch. Felt and patch twill are popular options, but you can also use other fabrics depending on the look you’re going for. This is where you can have some fun with colors, textures, and even prints.

  4. Embroidery Thread – Embroidery thread is made specifically for machine embroidery and is designed to run smoothly through your machine while giving your design that finished, slightly shiny embroidered look. You’ll want to choose your thread colors based on your design and this is one of the easiest ways to make the patch your own.

  5. Scissors – Regular scissors will work, but I prefer embroidery scissors because their smaller size makes it much easier to get close to the stitching and trim those tiny threads without accidentally cutting something you don't want to.

Start With the Right Design

While it would be amazing if we could take absolutely any image and turn it into a perfect embroidered patch, unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way.

The more complicated your design is, the more stitches and thread you’re likely going to need. Too much stitching packed into a small area can make your patch overly thick, stiff, or even cause problems while your machine is stitching.

When you’re starting out, simpler really can be better. Look for designs with clean outlines, defined shapes, and details that will still be recognizable once they're made out of thread.

This will make a huge difference when it comes time to digitize your design and, more importantly, when you finally get to watch your patch come to life.

Digitizing Your Patch

Once you have your design picked out, it’s time to turn it into something your embroidery machine can actually understand. This is called digitizing.

And no, unfortunately, your embroidery machine cannot look at a cute PNG and magically know what to do with it. (Wouldn’t that be nice?)

Digitizing tells your machine where to stitch, what direction those stitches should go, what type of stitch to use, and in what order everything should happen. Most machines come with basic text and some designs already loaded onto the machine. Otherwise, you can design your own using embroidery software or purchase already made files on sites like Etsy.

There are a few different stitches you’ll probably come across, but two of the big ones when making patches are fill stitches and satin stitches.

A fill stitch does exactly what it sounds like it fills in a larger area of your design with stitches. A satin stitch creates those smooth, closely packed stitches that you’ll often see around lettering, outlines, and especially the outside border of a patch.

If you’re new to digitizing, this is where I highly recommend experimenting. Your first attempt may look perfect on your computer and then look completely different once you actually stitch it out. That’s normal. Test it, look at what worked (and what definitely did not), make your adjustments, and try again.

Trial and error will be your best friend if you are digitizing the image yourself.

Build Your Patch in Layers

Now that your design is digitized, it’s finally time to make the patch!

Think of your patch as a little sandwich. Each layer has a job, and putting them together in the right order is what gives you a patch that feels sturdy and looks finished.

Start by hooping your stabilizer. Depending on how you digitized your design, your machine may first stitch a placement line. This gives you a guide for exactly where your patch material needs to go.

Next, place your felt, twill, or fabric over the placement line and let your machine stitch the tack down line. This holds everything in place while the rest of the design stitches.

From there, your machine will begin stitching the actual design. If you're making an appliqué patch, you may have additional placement and tack-down stitches for any fabric pieces you're adding.

Once everything is stitched, you're ready for the part that really makes it look like a patch the border.

The Satin Border Matters More Than You Think

I severely underestimated the importance of the satin border when I started making patches.

The satin border is what covers the raw edge of your patch and gives it that thick, clean, professional-looking finish. And while it sounds simple enough, getting it right can take some experimenting.

Too thin and you may still see fabric or fraying around the edges. Too thick or too dense and suddenly your machine is trying to punch through what feels like 47 layers of thread.

This is also where you want to pay attention to your design. If part of your satin border overlaps an area that has already been heavily stitched, you can end up stitching over the same spot again and again. That can make certain areas noticeably thicker than the rest of your patch.

Don't be afraid to adjust your border and do another test stitch. A millimeter here or there can make a surprisingly big difference.

Cutting & Finishing the Patch

Once your patch is finished stitching, it's time to clean it up.

Carefully remove it from the hoop and trim away the excess stabilizer. Then trim around the outside of your patch, getting as close to the satin border as you comfortably can without cutting through your stitches.

And I mean comfortably.

This is not the time to suddenly become overly confident with your scissors and accidentally cut into the border you just spent all that time perfecting.

Depending on the fabric you used, you may notice a little fraying around the edges. Tiny fibers can usually be carefully trimmed away, and a fray-prevention product can also help keep those edges under control.

Take your time with this step. A little cleanup can make a huge difference in how professional your finished patch looks.

Mistakes I Made So You Don't Have To

I would love to tell you that I digitized my patch, loaded it into my machine, pushed start, and immediately had the perfect patch.

That is absolutely not what happened.

Patch making has involved a lot of testing, adjusting, staring suspiciously at my embroidery machine, and trying again.

One of my biggest mistakes was overlapping too many stitches. Parts of my design were being stitched during the main design and then getting stitched AGAIN when the border went around them. The result? Some areas were ridiculously thick compared to everything else.

I also learned that your satin border doesn't need to be enormous to do its job. I wanted that beautiful, thick patch border, but thicker isn't automatically better. You need enough coverage to hide and protect the raw edge without creating a wall of thread.

Then there was fraying. Fabric looks perfectly innocent until you cut right next to it and suddenly there are tiny fibers everywhere. Choosing the right patch material, trimming carefully, and using something to help control fraying can make a huge difference.

But probably the biggest lesson I've learned is this:

Always do a test stitch.

What looks perfect on your computer screen doesn't always translate perfectly to thread. Your fabric, stabilizer, stitch density, thread, border, and even the size of your design can change how the finished patch turns out.

Your first stitch out isn't a failure. It's information.

Look at it. Figure out what you don't like. Change it. Stitch it again.

That's part of the process.

Attaching Your Finished Patch

You made it! Your patch is stitched, trimmed, cleaned up, and officially ready to go somewhere.

Now you have a few options.

The simplest is to leave it as a sew on patch. You can stitch it directly onto a jacket, backpack, tote bag, sweatshirt, or whatever else needs a little extra personality.

You can also add iron on adhesive backing to turn it into an iron-on patch. This gives the back of your patch a heat activated adhesive that can be attached to compatible fabrics with an iron or heat press.

And depending on what you're making, you don't necessarily have to permanently attach it at all. Hook-and-loop backing can be a fun option for patches you want to swap out.

Whichever method you choose, make sure it's appropriate for both your patch and the item you're attaching it to.

And there you have it!

Will your first patch be perfect? Probably not.

Mine wasn't.

But that's half the fun of making things yourself. You learn something, change something, and try again.

And sometimes the things that come out just a little crooked end up being our favorites anyway.
